I was on my way to my friend's place. He was leaving LA so people were coming to say goodbye.
I had a bottle of sparkling wine and a sparkling lemonade (I don't drink alcohol but I wanted something sparkling, too).
I took an Uber, not yet knowing it would be a long ride...
We were heading to my destination... but the other passenger asked the driver how long it would take to the airport, saying,
"I didn't know someone else would be here. I'm fine with that tho, I just don't wanna miss my flight. I have to arrive at LAX in, like, one hour."
The driver explained to her that,
"That's how Uber pool works. I'm going to drop her (meaning me) off first and I don't think you can make it. I strongly recommend you to take another Uber. Not Uber pool."
But she responded,
"My friend set this one up for me and I don't know about Uber. I can't take other one."
They kept arguing for a while. So I cut in,
"Hey, if we don't drop by Culver City (my destination), can she make it? I don't mind taking another Uber if I don't have to pay for this one. Can't you just drop me off here?"
Unfortunately the driver, who didn't look too bright, couldn't handle this cancel/refund kind of thing. He told me,
"No you can't cancel this one. It's already charged. Or, you want me to drop her off first?"
I gave out a big sigh. I texted my friend to say sorry and said,
"Okay, let's do that."
The girl smiled and said,
"Thank you. I appreciate it."
Wow. I'd got used to this fake appreciation since I'd come here. But I just fake smiled back and said "It's okay."
She fake thanked me again and I said "That's fine, I'm glad you made it." with a fake smile.
People were still there when I arrived at my friend's house.
We had lovely chat, lots of hugs and goodbyes, and some sparkling drink.
By the way, the driver left me in the car like a dog to use bathroom TWICE. I was a little worried that he might be stoned.
He was impressed by my behaviour and said he could wait for me till the party was done and drive me home. And I politely rejected his offer.
